letterboxing.org VS atlasquest.com

From: Melissa Nootz (mnootz@gmail.com) | Date: 2015-09-01 08:42:08 UTC-06:00
Hi,
My family is new to letterboxing. Could someone please explain the difference between letterboxing.org and atlasquest.com to me?

It seems there is some overlap between the two sites, but not total overlap. I'm feeling confused as to which site I should be using.

Thanks!
Melissa

Hi Melissa and welcome to letterboxing. Use both, they're not competing websites and the owners of each are good friends. Hope that helps, Jay in CT

The simple solution is to use them both!

Letterboxing.org is an older simplier clue hosting website. AtlasQuest has more developed features and includes message board and other community related information.

We started out using just letterboxing.org  until we got comfortable with the process, searches, recording finds, etc.

Then we "added" AQ.  First we learned how to search on AQ then logged our finds for the boxes that were listed on both sites.

Now we use both always - there are boxes listed on AQ that are not on LbNA and vice cersa.

The one thing that really confused us for a while was the word "Traveller" as they sort of mean different things on the 2 sites.

On LbNA they refer to Hitch Hikers (HH) where as on AQ they refer to Personal Traveller boxes.  Here is a link to a really nice explanation of box types that some wonderful boxer provided on the AQ message boards:

On LbNA, Traveler include Hitchhiker, Personal Traveler, Postal Letterbox, Virtual Letterbox or Other. That said, LbNA has minimal support for travelers.

So, when planting a letterbox, is it best to submit the box to both sites? Or how would that work?

I would say yes.  That will expose it to the most boxers.

Unfortunately, when AQ was created it used its own database for storing clues, thus resulting in two different repositories.  The same thing happens when people host clues on their own websites.  You can choose to only post your clues on one of them or all of them, or you can post to one place and link it to another place (e.g. in LBNA you can point to your own website using an embedded URL).  The advantage of posting to more than one place is more exposure.  The disadvantage is that it requires more maintenance to keep the clues up to date and in sync.  This is not a big deal when you have just a few boxes, but becomes quite problematic when you have placed hundreds.  The biggest difference between looking up clues on AQ and LBNA is that AQ is more search oriented while LBNA is more map oriented, but LBNA has improved its search engine significantly recently.  You might want to start out listing your clues on the site you prefer using, then decide to post to the other site later. I suggest looking at both sites and decide which one "feels" right for you.

So far, Ive not noticed any mention of the lbox-announce@yahoogroups.com site and its daily digest listing of letterbox placements.  Ive been receiving them for years, and its fun reading about new letterboxes placed in states and territories (and foreign countries) on a daily basis.  Its associated with the LbNA site, I believe.

Could someone elaborate more about this wonderful resource?  Its been so long since I started receiving the daily posts that Ive forgotten how they started.  THANKS!

Yes, one should always consider exposing oneself to as many boxers as possible.  This is just good, geeky fun.  On a more serious note, my yahoo email has once again been hijacked.  Usually it spams my contacts, but I think this one is pulling emails from places I go?  Not smart enough to track that, but if you get email from me, it may not be from me, so beware attachments.  It's only happened to one person so far, so it may be HER and not me, but you never know.

Please be advised that Yahoo! snoops emails, both outgoing and incoming.  If you communicate with me at this address, Yahoo! is spying on you, sometimes in person.   "Keep in mind that Yahoo’s privacy issues don’t end with email scanning. Yahoo has a vast network of data selling partners and affiliates. When you use Yahoo services, you aren’t just sharing with Yahoo: you’re sharing with hundreds of third-party companies you’ve never heard of. And some of these partners are pretty sensitive. For example, Yahoo’s Privacy Policy notes that “Yahoo! advertisers include financial service providers (such as banks, insurance agents, stock brokers and mortgage lenders) and non-financial companies (such as stores, airlines, and software companies).”

Just be careful who you expose yourself too.
